Migrants arriving in Newcastle this winter face a daunting set of challenges. Navigating a new city, cold temperatures, making sense of a foreign culture and language while trying to simultaneously deal with legal claims and housing issues – all this with just over £5 a day to survive on and all the limitations of the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s a terrifying recipe for isolation.
Our innovative twice-weekly InterAction Drop-in provides a welcoming, safe and supportive environment, giving migrants the chance to connect directly with the local agencies who can empower them to put down roots within their community.
Whether it’s advice, support or warming up with a hot drink and a chat, if we can resolve just one issue for someone, they can leave with one less thing to worry about and start to transform their life.

What difference will my donation make?
- £5 provides refreshments for 2 drop-in sessions
- £20 provides PPE for a month to keep our staff, volunteers and clients safe at the drop-in
- £75 is the cost for two members of staff to run an outreach session at local hotels
- £100 would allow us to invest in up-to-date equipment including tech and perspex screens
- £150 will cover the room hire for one drop-in session
One of our beneficiaries told us: “I’ve been able to speak to people which has taken away my loneliness and depression. I’ve got out of the house and met new friends.”
The local agencies who come along, have also see a huge amount of benefits too. “Clients can meet lots of different services as well as people from the same culture as them. It is also useful to refer to other agencies there and then.” said Jenny Hartley who is a Local Authority Asylum Support Liaison Officer at Newcastle City Council.
