We’d like to introduce you to our new Finance Manager, Phil Ambrose and the latest recruit to our Action Language team, Rim Day. Welcome to Action Foundation, we’re so glad you’re here!

Rim Day

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m originally from Syria but relocated to the UK in 2012 with my husband and two children. I enjoy taking long walks in nature, spending time with the family, watching movies and travelling.

What’s your career background?

I’ve got a BA in English literature from Aleppo University, an MA in TESOL from the University of Sunderland and I’m about to finish my PhD journey from Northumbria University. I’ve been a teacher of English since 2008 and I’ve worked in different places around the world, with people from different nationalities and age groups. I’m also a researcher, whose focus is on supporting low-literate learners to acquire the English language and integrate in the host society.

What’s your new role?

As a Language Project Officer, I support the Action Language team in providing free English language classes in Sunderland and Newcastle.

What drew you to apply for a job at Action Foundation?

I was drawn to Action Foundation because of their work in empowering refugees and asylum seekers to live independently in the UK. I want to use my experience in teaching to support those who are unable to access college and really need English classes. I’m glad to work for an amazing charity that really makes a difference in people’s lives.

Phil Ambrose

Tell us a bit about yourself

I live in Newcastle with my family – my wife Tracey and kids, Andy, 23 and Rebecca, 20. We have a black and white cat called Theo who’s very friendly and likes going out on prowls with the other cats in our street! I’m Sunderland born and bred. I went to Uni in Manchester back in the 1980s then started work as a Trainee Accountant in Sheffield and relocated to Newcastle in 1990. I like running, walking and cycling and doing lots of different Parkruns. I’m looking into my family history and getting into local history too. I like classic cars – I love my 20-year-old Mini Cooper.

 What’s your career background?

I’m a chartered accountant and have mostly worked in Finance Manager roles for charities including Diocese of Newcastle, Byker Community Trust, HealthWORKS Newcastle, and Changing Lives. I’ve also worked for Newcastle City Council managing the finances on their East End and Ouseburn regeneration programmes back in the late 90s. My first job was Trainee Accountant with National Audit Office.

What’s your new role?

I’m Finance Manager for Action Foundation. I’m responsible for managing financial systems and performance including accounting, budget management, financial reporting and finance control.

What drew you to apply for a job at Action Foundation?

The chance to work for an award winning local charity doing such fantastic and vital work for people in great need of support, helping them to settle into the local community and lead independent and resilient lives.
