We were delighted to welcome the MP for Sunderland Central Julie Elliott to Action Foundation at the end of September.

It was a lively time to drop in, so Julie not only  got to see a class in full swing, but also Maria was busy enrolling 11 new students too! Julie stayed and chatted to the students after class and had her photo taken.

“Language changes lives”

Julie told us she found the visit to be very positive and could see how the charity makes a difference to people’s lives:

“I was delighted to visit Action Foundation recently to see at first hand the amazing work this project does in empowering refugees to overcome exclusion and poverty by teaching them English.

Action Foundation provides free, community-led Skills for Life English classes for asylum seekers, refugees and other migrants, to help them adapt and integrate much more easily. Language changes lives. You need the right words to speak to a doctor, apply for a job, forge a friendship or navigate the housing market.

Action Foundation provides absolutely vital help for so many people in need. It is an amazing project.”

“Delighted”

The team were really pleased with the visit and thought the local politician was very down to earth and interested in the work of the charity for both housing and language in Sunderland.

CEO Julian Prior added: “Its always great to meet local MP’s who are interested in our work and concerned about the challenges migrants face in Tyne and Wear. I was delighted to meet Julie and discuss how we might be able to work together to support vulnerable migrants in Sunderland.”
