Volunteering Opportunities with Action Foundation

Action Foundation would not be able to function in the way that it does without the incredible input of so many volunteers. However, many of our volunteers tell us that they gain as much as they give through their experience with us. We have a number of opportunities currently available for volunteering listed below. If you would like more information about any of these roles please contact us.

Qualified ESOL teachers

We are continuously looking for qualified and experienced volunteer teachers (CELTA or equivalent) to join our team. Volunteer teachers help us develop our work by committing to two hours per week teaching time and be willing to take responsibility for preparing and presenting lessons. Teachers need to share our belief in inclusion and value the individual, as well as appreciating the importance of teamwork.

You can find out more on our Teacher information sheet

Volunteer teaching assistants

The Teaching Assistant role is to support our qualified English teachers in the delivery of classes. We aim to have one teaching assistant to three/four learners. Under the direction and guidance of our teachers, you would work alongside our learners, helping them to understand and cope with the language teaching as well as encouraging them to join in with the more social aspects of our lessons. Previous experience is not necessary as the teachers leading the classes will take responsibility for teaching materials and organisation.

“I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you  for the opportunity to volunteer at Action Language last year, and being so welcoming and encouraging whilst I was there. My time there last year sparked a real passion in me to work with migrants here in the UK, and it is a career path I am now looking at trying to pursue long-term. So thank you very much – I very much doubt I’d be sat here now had I not had the experience at Action Language!” (Action Language Volunteer)

Volunteer with Action Hosting!

Volunteer Hosts

We are currently recruiting hosts to be involved with our newest project, Action Hosting. This exciting new project matches hosts with a spare room in their home with a destitute asylum seeker. This scheme is the first of its kind in the Tyne and Wear and will provide much needed support and accommodation to a vulnerable group on the edge of society. No experience is necessary as full training and support will be provided. If you live in Tyneside, have a spare room and would like to support this disadvantaged group please get in touch!

For more information about the scheme and how you can get involved email info@actionhosting.org.uk or call 0191 2313113 or visit our webpage

The Resident Support Programme

We are developing a programme of workshops which will provide information, advice and access to opportunities to the refugees and asylum seekers living in our supported accommodation. The Resident Support Programme will be implemented by volunteers, so we are keen to hear from you if you have any relevant skills and share our enthusiasm in tackling social exclusion.

Volunteer Trainers

Volunteer Trainers will deliver the Resident Support Programme to small groups of residents at our offices in Newcastle and Sunderland. We would like to hear from anyone who has an interest or experience in any of the following: teaching, training, mentoring, working with people suffering from social exclusion or working with people whose first language is not English.

Volunteer Interpreters

Volunteer interpreters will facilitate communication between clients and the volunteer trainer by interpreting between spoken English and one of the 6 languages commonly spoken by the participants:  Arabic, Amharic, Farsi, Tigrinya, Kurdish or French.

For more information about the programme and how you can get involved email jesbalmer@actionfoundation.org.uk or call 0191 231 3113.
